Maintenance follows a recurring process. It involves cleaning the insulators, which are the elements located at the top of the tower that hold the cables transporting energy (conductors). To clean them from dust and other airborne particles that accumulate, workers spray them with demineralized water using a hose. Before this, they need to climb the tower structure, which is between 35 to 50 meters high, or use a crane to position themselves in front of the insulators. Sometimes, this maneuver also includes replacing damaged parts with new ones.
Similar to visual inspection, maintenance can be carried out with the line operating (live maintenance) or not operating (cold maintenance). The first option is widely applied internationally and is a much more ambitious method than cold maintenance. Specialists must be very meticulous and careful in executing maneuvers, especially on extra high voltage lines that transport the highest amount of energy.
